Map Description

Gameplay

The Mazing Race is a racing puzzle-map that combines the creative maze designing of a TD with a competitive puzzle. It is a completely new type of map for Warcraft, which requires quick thinking, smart resource use, and good mazing strategies.

Each player starts with a Maze Builder, which is used to design the basic maze structure using free mazing elements. The maze can then be augmented by special structures that require lumber to build. Players have very limited lumber resources, however.

Once the maze is constructed, the Maze Builder unit releases the Maze Runner. The Maze Runner is not controlled by the player, and simply runs the course that is designed. The Maze Runner can be harmed by maze augments and must live until she reaches the end of the maze. Each maze area also has a required time that the Runner must stay in the maze; exiting the maze area before this time kills your runner and means you cannot pass into the next area, and must be run again until she is contained within the maze for the required time. If your Runner beats the required time, you are awarded 1 lumber for each second over the required time to help you build in the next maze area.

Runs can be stopped at any time by pressing ESC, to prevent players from being blocked in permanently or to quit a run when it is clear your maze has a flaw.

Players cannot see what their opponents are building, but they can track their progress on the multiboard and their status is updated with text messages throughout the game. When you complete a maze area, your maze is then exposed to all players, but with your special structures removed.

Objectives

  • The first player through all 5 maze areas wins the race.
  • The game will continue after the first person wins, allowing other players to place.

Features

  • This map is playable for 1 to 5 players
  • Random maze augments and obstacles are placed the same in every player's maze area, making every game unique and challenging.
  • Players have the option to revert to a previous maze room to try to win more resources.

Update Information (v1-3)

  • The map name has been changed from Maze Runner to The Mazing Race
  • Fixed a minor bug that unintentionally removed runners other players finished
  • Added some minor conveniences for Observers (top view, fewer alarm messages)

More Info

  • This map is generally considered by most players to be very hard at first, but much easier once you have played through 2 or 3 times. In most games, your opponents are likely to give up, because the maze-building actually requires some thinking to accomplish and I make no apologies for that. It's meant to be a puzzle, so if you don't want to think, it is probably best if you don't play this map.
  • If the description sounds a bit confusing to you, the gameplay is much more natural once you play.
  • I have made every attempt to interface things which are commonly relegated to chat commands. This makes for a very full command card on the Builder, but shortens everything down to one hotkey.
  • The following chat commands are for multiplayer games: -stats ## (gives you statistical information about your opponents), top (changes your view to top-down - useful for players who have withdrawn or finished and do not have access to their builder any longer).
  • I expect to revisit this game type in the future, making a single-player version with more maze areas, harder puzzles, and more options for races and routes to victory.
